Jane Palatini Bowers was appointed Interim Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost at CUNY on June 1, 2018. She was educated at Harvard University, the University of California at Irvine, and the University of California at Berkeley, where she received her Ph.D. in 1981. She has written extensively on Gertrude Stein, including the book “They Watch Me as They Watch This”: Gertrude Stein’s Metadramas (U of Pennsylvania P, 1991), which was selected as a Choice Outstanding Academic Book the year it was published. She has been at CUNY for thirty years, as a faculty member at John Jay College, Hunter College, and the CUNY Graduate School, and in various administrative roles, most recently as Provost of John Jay College from 2007 to 2017. As provost, she led the college in a significant expansion of the professoriate, a dramatic increase in grant-funding, the development of new liberal arts majors and master’s programs, the creation of new academic departments, the establishment of many vital student success programs and services, and the continuous improvement of the college’s curriculum and academic support services. Dr. Bowers retired from John Jay in 2017 and is currently a Professor Emerita of English.
