Operated as a partnership between New Yorkers for Children, the Administration for Children’s Services, and CUNY, the Guardian Scholars program (GS) provides youth in foster care with stipends, one-on-one advisement, and coordinated access to campus and community resources while they’re in college.
The GS program is making a big difference for youth in foster care. Ninety-three percent of GS students persist from the fall semester to the spring semester, compared to the national average of 26% for youth in foster care. Seventy-eight percent of GS students are on track to graduate with a college degree on-time. This is a significant achievement when only 3-11% of foster youth who plan to go to college will graduate nationwide.
