The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program provides jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to your course of study.

Visit CUNY’s Federal Work Study Program website to learn more about available job opportunities.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Complete a Federal Work Study Program Student/Employer Acknowledgements Form and other required documents in order to begin working. Make sure to follow the guidelines provided by your college FWS Department in the Financial Aid Office.
  • Register and maintain an enrollment status of half-time (6 credits or equated credits) or greater. If, for any reason, your course load falls below half-time or you withdraw from school, you can no longer participate in the program and must stop working.
  • Based on FAFSA and is awarded to some, but not all, financial aid recipients. FWS eligibility will appear with your award package.

FWS PAYMENTS

FWS is an employment program based on FAFSA and students are limited to one FWS job per semester. Payments are processed on a bi-weekly schedule directly to the student for hours worked. Students are paid hourly as indicated on the Federal Work Study Program Student/Employer Acknowledgements Form. Payments will not offset or be credited towards your bill. If you cannot earn your entire FWS award before the end of the academic year, the unearned portion of your award is returned to the program. Please follow the established FWS Payroll Schedule for work periods, deadlines, and issue dates.

CUNY strongly recommends that students eligible for a FWS payment sign up for an electronic payment method such as Direct Deposit to their personal bank account or the CUNY Scholar Card which is a Money Network pre-paid card. Click here to learn more. All other students will receive a paper check in the mail.

Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in Direct Deposit or the CUNY Scholar Card to receive their FWS payments.

Active FWS students may view their FWS payment information by navigating to CUNYfirst Self-Service > Payroll and Compensation > View Work Study Paycheck.

FWS checks for students who have not signed up for electronic payment methods are sent to the student’s home address. To verify this address, students shouldlong in to CUNYfirst Self-Service > Personal Information:

W-2, WAGE AND TAX STATEMENT

As per IRS requirements, FWS participants will receive a Form W-2 from CUNY, reporting your annual FWS earnings for the tax year on or before the IRS deadline, January 31st. The Form W-2 also reports the amount of federal, state and other taxes withheld from your paycheck. In certain circumstances, FWS participants will receive a Form W-2c, which is a corrected Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement. Form W-2 is important when preparing annual tax returns. However, CUNY cannot advise students or their parents on the preparation of tax returns.

Students may also give consent to receive their Form W-2 electronically through CUNYfirst Self-Service. By consenting to receive an electronic Form W-2, you will be able to view, print and save your Federal Work-Study Form W-2 as soon as it is produced. You will not have to wait for a paper Form W-2 in the mail. Students who do not select the electronic option will receive a paper Form W-2 sent to the mailing address listed on CUNYfirst Self-Service. The deadline to provide consent for electronic W-2 is January 12.

Visit CUNYfirst Self-Service (Self-Service -> Payroll and Compensation -> View W-2/W-2c Consent) and click the check box to consent. You will receive an email when your Form W-2 is available.
