Program Structure

Students accepted into the 2017 CSURP program will be matched with a faculty mentor working in Evironmental Science, Nanoscience, Neuroscience, Photonics, or Structural Biology at the Advanced Science Research Center or at one of the CUNY colleges.

Students will work closely with their mentors and members of their research team to develop a project that can be conducted over the course of the 10-week program. Students will also work with their mentors to establish and maintain regular working hours. (Students currently engaged in research in a CUNY lab should expect to be assigned to a different mentor.)

All program participants will meet for weekly CSURP programming every Thursday from 2-4 pm. These activities will include research seminars, workshops on graduate school preparation, communication skills, research integrity and career development. Past programs have also included behind-the-scenes trip to the American Museum of Natural History. The program culminates in a final poster session where students present their work to peers, faculty and administrators.

A stipend of $4,000 (taxable) is offered to applicants accepted into the program, as well as three monthly unlimited New York City Transit MetroCards to assist with transportation costs. The program aims to promote a sense of community among CSURP scholars and encourages participants to take advantage of free University housing.

The program runs from Monday, June 5 until Thursday, August 10, 2017.

The program is open to students enrolled at any CUNY college. Students enrolled at the senior colleges must be sophomores or juniors at the time of application. Students at the community colleges must have at least 30 credits at the time of application.

CSURP is also open to students enrolled at universities in the states of New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut.

Participants of CSURP may not take classes or hold other jobs for the duration of the program and are expected to attend all scheduled CSURP seminars and activities. Due to the high number of applications, students who have previously participated in CSURP are not eligible to reapply.
